The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in an evidence-based, chemically synthesized modern drug discovery platform will likely result in progressive revolutionary advancement. Although modern medicine remains the key player in combating many major diseases, a successful remedy for many chronic diseases has still not been discovered. Additionally, many modern medicines have severe adverse effects and require replacement with newer, safer alternatives. As such, traditional plant-derived medicines could be an alternative knowledge hub for drug discovery exploration. However, the techniques of this approach have become mostly outdated. In this review, we discuss the paradigm of AI integration in different drug discovery phases and provide a framework of an AI-assisted drug discovery platform for plant-derived traditional medicines to identify successful alternative drug molecules.
